Our Websites

What we have done

• We build and update the site with a content management system that uses stylesheets to allow people with screen readers to use the sites easily.
• The design is clear and uncluttered to allow people to see what is on each page.
• We have used a consistent approach to navigation on the websites such as the main headings of Business, Community, Helping You, Library Services, Local Authorities, Services and Tourism.
• Breadcrumb trails are used to show the pages you have trawled through to get to the current page.
• We use jargon-free, plain language wherever possible.
• Quick links are at the very top of each page to allow people to Skip Navigation, to choose the A-Z listing, to swap from English to Irish and back again, to Print the current page and to increase or decrease text size.
• Staff in the IT department who are responsible for developing the sites have attended courses on designing for accessibility, creating useful public service sites and writing content specifically for websites.

What we will do

• We are developing a User Liaison Group and have a feedback form to provide guidance to us on continuous improvement requested by people.
• The sites will be reviewed by an independent group of people with disabilities.
• Staff in Waterford Local Authorities who provide information for the websites will have access to training on providing appropriate content for the websites.
• Internal guidelines advise and direct staff in providing information to people who are blind or sight impaired, people who are deaf or hard of hearing and people with an intellectual disability.
• Ensure all PDF documents on site have an accessible friendly alternative.
• Achieve AA (WCAG WAI Level 2) accessibility for the site.
• Maintain an Irish version of the site.
