Death Registers

Using Death Registers

The Registration of Deaths became compulsory in Ireland on January 1st 1864. The General register Office at 8 - 11 Lombard St., Dublin 2 holds the master indexes of registrations for the entire country, and is open to the public for research. The Local Registrar's District Office holds the original Records. The Local Registrar's Office for County Waterford is located at St. Joseph's Hospital, Dungarvan and holds records of all deaths registered to date. Waterford County Library holds records of all deaths registered from January 1st 1864 until December 31st 1901 only.

Information to be found on death registers include the following;

Date and place of death
Name and surname
Sex
Marital status
Age
Rank, profession or occupation
Certified cause of death and duration of illness
Signature, address and qualification of informant

Searches can be made by:

Name Authority
Locate details of deceased using name authority. Searching for 'Ryan Mary' will locate 83 records. These records relate to deceased only.
Name Keyword
This is a broader search and locates records of both informants and deceased matching the searched for name. 'Ryan Mary' will locate 262 records, which includes all informants named 'Mary Ryan'. Useful in some family history research.
