Using Tithe Applotment Books

The Tithe Applotment Books give the results of a valuation which took place in the 1820's and early 1830's. This valuation was Tithe Applotment (tn)carried out by the Church of Ireland. Being the official State Church at the time, all members of the population, irrespective of religious denomination, had to pay tithes (tax).

It is held on microfilm, and is searchable  by parish under film and tab number. Seventy six Civil Parishes make up the County Waterford Tithe Books. This Valuation will indicate whether a family was living in a specific townland in the 1820's.It also gives an indication of the economic status of a family, as land held is included in the details provided. Other information provided includes:

  • Name of occupiers of each Townland
  • Number of acres held by occupier
  • Annual Tithe due
  • Civil Parish and Townland
