Town Council Honours Lismore Inter County Stars

Date: 07 Feb 2005

Lismore Inter County StarsLismore Town Council on behalf of the people of the town honoured two of the towns sporting heroes with a Civic Reception following February's 05 Council Meeting. All Star Dan Shanahan and All Star nominee Dave Bennett along with their families and the club officials of Lismore GAA were welcomed to the Council Chamber by Mayor Peter Ahearne. He described the night as a "special occasion for the Town Council and for Lismore". He congratulated both men on their success and said they had done the town proud. In greeting the two men, Director of Services and County Engineer Mr John O'Flynn reflected on the history of Lismore in the promotion of our national sport and its role over the years at provincial and national level. He said he looked forward with great expectation to further honours being heaped on Dan and Dave and all the Waterford team in the not too distant future.

Dan Shanahan, Mayor, Dave BennettCllr Jimmy O'Gorman carried the unusual profile of also being Vice Chairman of the Munster Council as he addressed the gathering. Cllr Jimmy O'Gorman spoke of the great honour and pride the people of the town felt having representatives in Thurles, Limerick and Cork. He also recognised all those at grass roots level who started both Dan and Dave off by bringing them to training, driving them here and there and bringing them safely home to their parents. He said that the two lads were now deservedly getting the glory, but he felt that we should never forget those people particularly in the club and schools who make the GAA as an organisation work. He felt that the local G.A.A. club has played a pivotal role in the social fabric of the town and the careers of both Dan and Dave are an example to all.

Mayor Peter Ahearne then went on to present to Dan Shanahan and Dave Bennett with Civic Scrolls and inscribed crystal vases.

Speaking on behalf of himself and Dan Shanahan, Dave Bennett said "It’s great to come back to your home town and to be recognised in this way. It is very humbling."
