Tidy Towns 2004 – Lismore Wins

When the results of Ireland's 2004 Tidy Towns Competition were announced in Dublin, there was great reason for Waterford celebration as the overall winner was Lismore. This follows on the victory a number of years back by Ardmore as Ireland's tidiest town.

While the credit for this wonderful victory must very much rest with the Tidy Towns Committee in Lismore, it is also proof of a major collaboration between the Committee, Waterford County Council, Lismore Town Council, FS, LEADER, the local schools and various other state agencies and community groups. This collaboration is very much acknowledged within the adjudicator's report.

From Waterford County Council's perspective, this award is a wonderful complement to the staff in the Lismore Area. In particular, special congratulations to Area Engineer, Noel Healy; Town Clerk, Eric Flynn; General Services Supervisor, John Foley and Town Mayor, Cllr. Peter Ahearne and to all their staffs and colleagues. This award has been gradually getting nearer over the last number of years and is the result of a combination of good collaborative planning on the one hand and of dealing effectively and efficiently with everyday matters on the other.

Civic works, painting and landscaping schemes, environment awareness campaigns have all combined with road sweeping, planting and litter patrols to realize this victory. Knowing the correct thing to do, but also doing it. While everybody in Waterford County Council can feel well pleased, true recognition though where it is most deserved. To those community volunteers, who, in rain, hail or snow are out on the streets litter picking at 7 o'clock in the morning, this is your victory. To the Committee, who motivated the community and all organizations within it, this is your day.
