This year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Canon Patrick Power, born in Callaghane, Co. Waterford on 8th March 1862. Canon Power was a scholar with great depth and breadth of interests in archaeology, history, heritage, Irish language and placenames of Ireland and more particularly of Waterford. He wrote extensively and is most particularly known for his great work The Placenames of Decies, for which the people of Waterford owe him a great debt.

To celebrate his life and his works, Waterford County Council, Waterford City Council and Waterford Institute of Technology have joined together to provide a seminar on Canon Patrick Power, which will take place in WIT, Waterford City on Thursday 8th March.

This seminar will look into aspects of the life and work of Canon Power and will also look at new developments in his areas of research. One exciting new area of research is the Field Name Project with Whitechurch and Fenor National Schools, where pupils have been researching their local field names. The results of their research will be exhibited at the Seminar.

The seminar will be an all-day bilingual event. Simultaneous translation (from Irish to English and from English to Irish) will be available throughout the day. For more information download the seminar programme.
