Tithe Applotment Books

The Tithe Applotment Books were compiled between 1823 and 1837 and record the names of occupiers and owners of land, giving a description of the land in order to determine its value for the purpose of levying the 1/10th tithe due to the Established Church (Church of Ireland).

The Tithe Applotments are available from the National Archives www.nationalarchives.ie and a copy for County Waterford is held on microfilm at the County Archive.

The Tithe Applotment surveys were carried out by two commissioners appointed to each parish. The detail of the surveys varies slightly from one parish to another. In some cases the landowner and all tenants are listed but in others only the landlord and the larger tenants were included in the survey.

The tithe applotments are organised by parish and within the parishes by townland but in some cases the surveyors did not organise their survey into townlands, for example, in the parish of Ardmore, Slievegrine is the name given to an area that includes a number of townlands, such as, Ahaun, Balyguiry, Carigeen, Faha, Glenlicky, Gurteen, Monea, Pulla, Mweeling, Rusheens, Scrahan and Toor. As a result these townlands are not specificially listed in the Tithe Applotments but form part of the area identified as Slievegrine.
