Chip Pan Unit        Chief Fire Officer hails successful Fire Safety Week

Chief Fire Officer forWaterfordCounty, Captain Michael Hession, has hailed as an “outstanding success” the recently concluded Fire Safety Week.  “Fire Safety Week is a national initiative,” says Hession, “but here incountyWaterfordour firefighters make an extra special effort to go out and to make the week really work.  From Tallow to Dunmore East fire crews took to the streets to meet the public and to press home the fire safety message.  Over 10,000 individual face-to-face contacts were made during the week, which represents an outstanding achievement by the firefighters.”

Hession goes on to explain that one of the key activities during the week was the distribution of a booklet entitled ‘Fire safety at home’.  “This is an excellent publication focusing on the four golden rules of fire safety at home,” says Hession, “and I would strongly encourage anyone who hasn’t already got a copy to pick one up.  They are available free of charge at all of the county’s library branches and also from the Council offices in Dungarvan, Tramore and Lismore.”

Although Fire Safety Week is over for another year, the Chief Fire Officer reminds people that fire safety is an ongoing concern.  “We are coming up on Halloween and it will be Christmas soon after,” he says, “and these are times of the year when extra vigilance is required.  I would like to remind people that there is no Fire Brigade charge for house fires, so in the event of a fire the rule is ‘Get out, get the fire brigade out and stay out.’  I sincerely hope that the message of Fire Safety Week will remain in the public mind all year round.”
