Homelessness

How can we help?

We can directly provide accommodation for homeless people, make arrangements with voluntary organisations for accommodation, provide financial or other assistance and if necessary, arrange private accommodation.

A person is regarded as homeless if they:

  • have no accommodation available which they can reasonably occupy. This includes people who would normally reside with the homeless person
  • are living in a hospital, country home, night shelter or other such institution because they do not have accommodation available
  • and are unable to provide accommodation from their own resources

Homeless people in need of permanent housing can apply for a tenancy. If eligible they will be placed on the waiting list. The length of time waiting for a tenancy to be allocated will depend on the demand for housing in the area and their individual circumstances on the waiting list.
Hostel accommodation may be available on a nightly basis.

Bed and breakfast

Bed and breakfast accommodation may be provided where the accommodation needs of a homeless person or family are immediate and acute and no suitable hostel accommodation is available.

Private rented accommodation may be an appropriate option for some homeless people. Part of the rent may be met under the Supplementary Welfare Allowance Scheme. Decisions in relation to rent assistance rest with the Health Service Executive (HSE).
