Housing (Standards for Rented Houses) Regulations, 1993

The local authority is responsible for enforcing the legal requirements in relation to standards, under the Housing (Standards for Rented Houses) Regulations, 1993. Since January 1st 1994 landlords of houses including apartments, flats, etc have had a statutory duty to ensure that these dwellings comply with certain minimum physical standards. The local authority has the power to investigate breaches of the regulations and to prosecute offences, which carry substantial financial penalties.

For full details of the regulations see the "Charter for Rented Housing" information booklet, available from the Housing Section.
