How is the structure of my house maintained?
Tenants of the local authority can make enquiries and requests for maintenance to the housing section in the Civic Offices. Typical maintenance repairs may include structural repairs such as to the roof, windows and doors. The aim is to maintain the useful life of the property and provide a reasonable standard of dwelling for the tenants. Contact?
Am I responsible for the Garden or just the House itself?
You are responsible for both.
You must make sure that you, others living with you including children do the following:
- look after your home and your garden in a reasonable manner. This also includes maintenance of walls, gates or fences
- Under the Litter Byelaws, each householder is obliged to keep free of litter the footpath or pavement adjoining their property and also any road gutter on or at the side of such pavement.
- Refuse should be left for collection in a manner which ensures that it does not become litter i.e. be placed in your wheelie bin with a bin tag attached
- Any laneway/walkway adjoining your house should be kept in a clean condition and should not be used for dumping
Must I carry out all Repairs?
- You are responsible for redecorating the inside of your house
- You are also responsible for any breakage of glass in the windows and any damage to the fixtures, fittings or structure of the dwelling
- You must also carry out minor repairs necessary to doors and windows, plumbing, cooking and heating appliances installed by you as the tenant (See Estate Management section for more details)
- You are responsible for the repair of any wilful or malicious damage and if Waterford County Council undertake repairs resulting from such damages, the cost of such repairs will be charged to you as the tenant(s). But if you reported the incident to the Gardai and a written report is made your case will be investigated.
Can I make alterations to my house?
- You must get agreement before starting any improvements, alterations, or additions to your home
- We are usually happy to agree, but we must check safety
- You may also need planning permission for certain works
