Canon Power  The 8th March 2012 marks the 150th Anniversary of the birth of Canon Patrick Power at Callaghane, Co. Waterford on the 8th March 1862. Canon Power was a prolific scholar in a wide range of subjects, from archaeology to history, to heritage, the Irish language and placenames. He published a wide range of articles and books, and is particularly remembered for his work, "The Placenames of Decies", which is an invaluable source of history and folklore for the people of the Decies.

To celebrate the life and works of Canon Patrick Power, Waterford County Council & Waterford City Council, with the support of Waterford Institute of Technology, have come together to organise a day-long seminar in the T&L Building, WIT, Waterford City on Thursday, 8th March 2012.

The seminar will focus on particular areas of Canon Power's life, as well as looking at new developments in his areas of research. This will include the presentation of the results of new research on Field Placenames by two County Waterford national schools - Whitechurch NS and Fenor NS, where the pupils have been carrying our research on local placenames of interest.

This day-long bilingual seminar will include simultaneous translation facilities for delegates from Irish to English and from English to Irish.

For full details on the speakers and on how to register, see the Seminar programme:
