Seachtain na Gaeilge 2012

Date: 02 Apr 2012

Waterford County Council’s Seachtain na Gaeilge programme this year featured a seminar on Canon Patrick Power, which took place in WIT, and a number of events in Waterford County Libraries. Seachtain na Gaeilge events took place in Dungarvan, Lismore and Tramore Branch Libraries and were very well attended.

Over 60 children from local schools enjoyed fun workshops with The ImaginationGYM® in Dungarvan Library. They enjoyed the An Choill Draíochta (The Enchanted Forest) audio program, through which they created their own stories by going on a journey into an imaginative world of folklore, nature, animals, music, dreams and wishes.

Popular storyteller, Niall de Búrca visited Lismore Branch Library, where he enchanted local schoolchildren with his colourful and exciting storytelling style.   Tramore Branch Library held a number of events, including the ever-popular Bingó as Gaeilge and a seisiún with the Tramore Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. Pupils from 5th class, Glór na Mara NS in Tramore are pictured (below) with their prizes after the 'Bingó as Gaeilge.'

In addition to the Library events, more than 130 people attended a one-day seminar to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Canon Patrick Power, author of “The Placenames of Decies”, in Waterford Institute of Technology on Thursday 8th March. Organised by Waterford County Council and Waterford City Council, with the support of WIT, the event featured a number of eminent guest speakers who spoke on different aspects of Canon Power's life. The seminar, which was supported by Foras na Gaeilge, was a great success and a fitting tribute to one of Waterford's premier scholars and writers.

Pictured below are pupils from Whitechurch and Fenor National Schools, Co Waterford, who took part in a Placenames Project to mark the Canon Power Seminar. They are pictured with their teachers in WIT attending the seminar, in the company of Cllr. Pat Hayes, Mayor of Waterford City and Cllr. Liam Brazil, Mayor of Waterford County. Also in the picture are Collr. Lola O'Sullivan and President of WIT, Mr Ruaidhrí Neavyn.
