Background Information

The Irish Officer of Waterford County Council organises an annual Irish language cultural weekend in the county entitled ‘Tionól an Fhómhair’. Tionól an Fhómhair focuses on a different theme each year, in order to publicly celebrate the Irish culture, heritage and language of County Waterford. The Council organises the event in conjunction with local communities in different parts of the county. Originally known as Tionól an tSamhraidh, it first took place in 2003 and to date has been hosted by communities in Ballylaneen, Dungarvan, An Rinn, Touraneena, Cúl na Sméar/Kilgobnet, Kilrossanty, An Sean Phobal, Ballyduff Upper and Kilrossanty.

The Tionól has hosted eminent guest speakers from all over the country, as well as organising events and activities of local interest on themes such as Tadhg Gaelach Ó Súilleabháin, Coláiste na Rinne, Sean Nós Singing, Writers of Sliabh gCua, Traditional Music and The Harvest Tradition.
