Ten Tips on Saving Energy in your Home
- Insulate your home where possible to the 2002 Building Regulation Standards for Insulation. A resultant energy saving of between 40-60% can be obtained in implementing these measures.
- Have a combustion efficiency test carried out on your boiler every 1-2 years. This ensures your boiler is operating at its optimum efficiency.
- Buy "A" rated appliances such as washing machines when existing appliances have reached the end of their working cycle.
- Insulate your cylinder with a lagging jacket and install a time clock and thermostat on your immersion. This will result in the immersion operation matching occupancy and no overheating of water will occur due to proper thermostatic control.
- Replace your current oil/gas fired boiler with a condensing boiler which operates at approximately 15% higher efficiency to that of a conventional boiler.
- Fit Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL's) in rooms that require plenty of light for long periods eg kitchens, living areas, halls and stairs etc.
- Replace dripping taps, install spray/jet taps that consume less water. Water temperature can be adjusted easily.
- Install renewable energy technology such as Solar water heating, biomass boiler etc. These forms of technology can have 0% emissions in CO2.
- Install thermostatic radiator valves so that each individual room has its own thermostatic control.
- Insulate all heating and hot water pipe work in boiler houses and exposed areas.
