Flooding during serious storm events has been an issue in Dungarvan in the recent past.
Waterford County Council commissioned a study to be carried out on flooding in Dungarvan and to make recommendations for a strategy to manage stormwater run-off within the Dungarvan Catchment Area. The catchment boundary extends to beyond the boundaries of the new Development Plans for the town. This report, entitled Dungarvan Stormwater Strategic Study, was published in early 2003.

Significant future development of the northern and eastern parts of Abbeyside is limited by the topography of the land. Any future development will have serious flooding consequences during storm events.  One of the major recommendations of the aforementioned study was that significant modifications would be required to the existing drainage infrastructure in the Tournore/Duckspool/ Burgery/Clonmore area. The modifications proposed included a 32,000m³ Detention Pond to be located just east of the Sallybrook housing development.

Similarly in the Shandon/Kilrush Area of the town, serious flooding occurs in the lands adjacent to the N25 and will act as a limiting factor against further development in this mainly Commercial/Industrial zoned area. The recommendation was that new twin storm sewers would be required along the N25 from the Kilrush Roundabout to the Colligan Estuary to relieve flooding in this area. A smaller diameter extension of each pipe would be required along the R672 regional road (Cappoquin Road) and the L3145 local road (Fire Station Road).

It is anticipated that these works would commence in 2008. Drawings showing the scope of the works are available at the following links:
