Faithlegg Water Supply Scheme

The Faithlegg Water Supply Scheme is located in East Waterford and distributes water to the northern side of Dunmore East, Passage East, Faithlegg, Cheekpoint and their surrounding areas. Due to its close proximity to Waterford City the area has experienced a surge in population and demand in recent years. In particular, Faithlegg has experienced considerable development in the last few years including a large hotel complex, golf course and over 100 houses. The increase in demand has put significant pressure on the existing Faithlegg Water Supply source at Belle Lake and the existing water distribution network, particularly during peak Summer months.

Following DoELG approval Consulting Engineers were appointed by Waterford Co. Council in November 2005 to prepare a Preliminary Report setting out proposals for the upgrading of the Faithlegg Water Supply Scheme. The Report is now substantially complete and is currently being assessed by Waterford Co. Council. The proposals include replacing the existing Belle Lake source with the East Waterford Water Supply, providing additional storage reservoirs at Cheekpoint and Foilaun, booster pumping at Faithlegg and upgrading of the existing pipe network.

It is hoped that DoELG approval to the Preliminary Report will be forthcoming by early 2008 and that Contract Documents can then be prepared with the objective of seeking tenders early in 2009 and construction commencing by mid 2009.

The overall cost of the Faithlegg Water Supply Scheme is currently estimated at €3.7 million.
