Question: Why is the Council embarking on this initiative?

WCC wishes to ensure the long-term protection of the Comeragh mountain area, particularly in the interests of the communities living there. People living in the Comeraghs have raised on a number of occasions with the Council the untapped potential that is there, particularly from a tourism perspective. One of the suggestions for example is that the area be designated as “The Comeragh Lake District”. Why are there not more tourists coming to enjoy the magnificent scenery and recreational facilities which are there? Can the area be better marketed? Can more tourists be attracted there, especially off-season? Can a management plan be put in place to ensure that the area is managed properly for future generations?

This initiative will assist in developing tourism products that use the amenities of the area without damaging them, e.g. walking , cycling, fishing, rock climbing. Tourism and related services can provide much needed employment, both full-time and part-time and this must be a priority over the coming years.
