Current ExhibitionsThe Old Market House Arts Centre, Lower Main Street, Dungarvan is ‘The Tiger in Autumn’ by Anthony Hayes, ‘ A Quiet Kingdom – Recent Paintings from Kerry’ by Cora Murphy, and ‘Witness’ by Margo Banks. Anthony Hayes is a Dungarvan based artist who is a familiar sight painting around the town and the environs. This new body of work called ‘The Tiger in Autumn’ is created solely in Dungarvan from some very interesting vantage points. His palette is very earthy and these images have a tendency to remind us of days gone by, like some sepia photographs of captured moments. The Murphy and Banks exhibitions are curated by Erika Cagney who is a graduate of the University of Limerick with a Masters in Art History. Erika has co-curated shows in the past but this will be her first solo endeavour. Erika explains : ‘I wanted to work with artists whose work had a vibrancy and were in touch with nature, I hope that visitors to the exhibitions will see their appeal as I do.’ Cora Murphy’s works ‘A Quiet Kingdom - Recent Paintings from Kerry' brings together a selection of the artists recent oils made in the Kerry boglands. The work are small, heavy in oil and detail and demonstrate what Murphy describes as the 'meditative' part of her practice; rather than sketching Murphy prefers to do her research by immersing herself in the landscape on long, meandering walks through the boglands. Cora is from Co. Carlow but has been living and working in Cork city since 2008, after extensive travel overseas. Dublin artist, Margo Banks show ‘Witness’, consists of a mixture of oil paintings and drawings of animals. They are witnesses to the changes in the landscape of Teermoyle in South West Kerry, where the artist’s mother was from. The role of drawing is integral to Margo’s work. She has exhibited extensively in the Blue Leaf Gallery, Dublin and in Cill Rialaig, Co. Kerry. These exhibitions continue until March 31st 2012. The Arts Centre is open Tuesday to Friday 11am to 5pm (lunch 1.30-2.30p.m.) Saturdays 1pm to 5pm. Admission is free and all are welcome.
